LiNK500 RPR TNC: The Ultimate Tool for Data Mode Ham Radio Operators

Introducing the LiNK500 RPR TNC: A Versatile Tool for Digital Amateur Radio

The LiNK500 RPR TNC is a highly versatile device designed to meet the evolving needs of data mode ham radio operators. Built on the foundation of the Teensy TNC, the LiNK500 expands its capabilities with advanced features such as RPR support, integrated GPS, APRS tracking, and cross-platform compatibility. This device serves as a comprehensive solution for modern digital communication while maintaining a straightforward, user-friendly design.

Hello Operators.
I thought is was about time to show you one of the projects I have on my bench. Many of you might remember the Teensy TNC used during the Arctic Circle 2023 expedition. Well, Oliver DL4KA has taken much of what we learned about the Teensy, and brought it up to date.

Key Features of the LiNK500

  1. Robust Packet Radio (RPR) Support:
The LiNK500 is optimized for Robust Packet Radio (RPR), a mode that provides reliable data transmission over HF bands, even in weak signal conditions. This capability ensures dependable communication in challenging environments, making it an essential tool for emergency and field operations.
  2. Standalone APRS Tracking with Built-in GPS:
With dedicated APRS support, the LiNK500 facilitates automatic position and status reporting. This is particularly useful for team or event coordination, and emergency response. The integrated GPS receiver allows the LiNK500 to operate independently as an APRS tracker, providing precise real-time location data. For enhanced signal performance, an external GPS antenna can be connected.
  3. Built-in Audio Interface:
The LiNK500 eliminates the need for an external audio interface. Its internal audio processing supports a variety of digital modes, including FT8, JS8Call, VARA HF/FM, and more, simplifying setup for operators.
  4. APRS Tracker:
With dedicated APRS support, the LiNK500 facilitates automatic position and status reporting. This is particularly useful for event coordination, emergency response, and situational awareness.
  5. Bluetooth Module for Wireless Operation:
Equipped with Bluetooth, the LiNK500 supports wireless connections to Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux devices, allowing flexibility in configuration and operation.
  6. CAT and Data Interfaces:
The device simplifies radio control with its CAT interface and facilitates bidirectional analog data transfer to and from your transceiver.
  7. USB-C Interface with Internal USB Hub:
A modern USB-C connection ensures efficient data transfer, while the internal USB hub adds an extra port for connecting a transceiver or other peripherals.

Applications and Tested Use Cases

The LiNK500 has been tested and proven to work with numerous applications across various platforms. Here’s a breakdown:

Android:

  • WoAD (Winlink on Android Devices): For email communication over HF.
  • APRSdroid: For position tracking and messaging.
  • FT8 on Android: For weak-signal digital communication.

iOS:

  • aprs.fi app: For APRS mapping and tracking.
  • RadioMail: For Winlink messaging.

Windows:

  • Winlink Express: For robust email communication over HF and VHF.
  • WSJT-X and JTDX: For FT8 and other weak-signal modes.
  • JS8Call: For long-distance messaging.
