By now most of us would agree that the Lab599 TX-500MP is the Ultimate rugged field radio. In this blog/video, I’ll show you my very first Winlink session using this preparedness-minded HF Radio.
Patreon and YouTube channel members received early access to this video earlier in the week. Today I’m sharing the public release and a short write-up of the setup and results.

This was my first Winlink session using the Lab599 TX-500MP paired with the LiNK500MP robust packet TNC and audio interface with built-in GPS. Running VARA HF on the 40‑meter amateur band, I connected to a station roughly 720 km away with less than 10 watts of output power. Performance was outstanding.
In a market where most ham radio manufacturers have stepped away from truly rugged HF designs, the TX-500MP stands out. It’s compact, weather-resistant, and built for field work. Combined with the LiNK500MP by DL4KA, the rig becomes a highly capable Winlink station for off-grid, portable, and emergency communications. This session reinforced a point I’ve made for years: you don’t need massive power to move critical data when your system is efficient and the mode is appropriate.
